Tomorrow is May 1st—Labor Day and the beginning of the month dedicated to family caregivers: all those who care for one or more elderly, ill, or disabled relatives. A true daily challenge that caregivers—often women—face, balancing time, energy, patience for others, work commitments, and self-care.
We, the Skippers, want to go beyond thoughts on insufficient services, never enough money, little support from other family members, and the shaky healthcare system. We do this because we, women and caregivers, have something extra—we are #antifragile.
Caregivers and Antifragility: Everyday Superheroes
Being a caregiver is not just about facing daily challenges; it is about transforming every day into an opportunity for growth and empowerment. Nassim Taleb defines Antifragile (the title of his famous book) as a system that evolves through difficulties, becoming stronger and more adaptable.
Caregivers are antifragile because, through life’s trials, they refine key skills and develop extraordinary resilience. Everyday superheroes, whose personal experience is equivalent to that of top managers and entrepreneurs:
1. Adaptability: Every day is unpredictable for caregivers. Health issues, sudden emergencies, and routine changes require quick solutions. Constant exposure to uncertainty and the ability to manage ongoing emergencies make caregivers exceptionally skilled at setting priorities and handling complex situations with clarity.
2. Emotional Strength: Facing physical and emotional fatigue, finding balance between work and family care, and managing loneliness and financial pressure build an exceptional inner strength. Despite inevitable moments of discouragement, caregivers grow stronger and more aware of their abilities.
3. Advanced Problem-Solving: Caregivers not only learn to solve practical problems but also develop a strategic mindset, useful in any field—from work to personal life. This skill makes caregivers perfect for leadership and management roles.
4. Empathy and Relational Skills: Caregiving teaches emotional management, understanding others’ needs, and communicating with sensitivity. These relational skills are essential in professional environments and coordination roles.
Antifragile and Ready to Reinvent Themselves
According to Taleb, what is antifragile doesn’t just withstand shocks—it uses them to evolve, overcoming mere resilience. Caregivers do exactly this: they don’t just endure challenges but transform them into added value, becoming more aware and competent. As expert Vivian Frazier says, “Caregiving is a constant learning experience.” Caregivers quickly acquire new knowledge and effortlessly reinvent themselves.
Our dream is for the world to view caregiving from a different perspective, recognizing and valuing the antifragility of caregivers, thereby embracing an immense resource.
Happy May 1st and happy caregiving month to all!
